Postcard - The Galloway Hoard - Quatrefoil 'Face' Brooch

The Galloway Hoard contains the richest and most varied range of Viking-Age objects ever discovered in Britain and Ireland, including this unusual Anglo-Saxon quatrefoil brooch, one of a pair otherwise unique to this Hoard.  The iconography of these brooches depicts two of the five senses - sight and sound.  Here, two of the heads are blowing blast horns and the other two faces are reacting accordingly (with their exaggerated ears ringing)!  Mid-ninth century AD
